Gaius was naught five summers when his father perished. He was shy of six when his infant brother fell sick and didn't come home, and learned how to fend for himself before his seventh summer, the year his mother's losses began to seep into her bones.The first time his trap caught a live animal, messy and suffering, the boy cried and begged for it's forgiveness. The meat he gathered from his kill was meager and unfilling, but he offered his watery soup and gamey catch to his mother all the same.He hoped. His people were good at that, he would learn: to force life at the ends of the world, to encourage a young widow to keep living past her broken heart.Maybe Solus zos Galvus had done such a thing, too. It was the Emperor that caught the little boy in the woods behind the palace, tracking the footprints in the snow to catch another meal. The boy eyed a fox, a dead hare in it's maw, and had felt dread curdle his petite when a single arrow embedded itself into the fox's skull.

The Emperor offered him an ultimatum:He could use his skills for his army, or he could be let go with his feast - the rabbit and fox had been field dressed just for him. But if he saw him in his woods again, he wouldn't fire at the boy's prey. He would fire at the boy himself for his crimes.Gaius was twelve summers. He had been surviving on little and less, watching his mother wither away like greenery at first frost, and had nothing to lose with joining the Emperor's forces.(He wished he could say he thought about it, about leaving his mother in the cold dark, that both options kept a boy in men's shoes, that he lost no matter what he chose.And maybe that was why he hadn't. )He agreed. In the autumn of his thirteenth year, Gaius earned his oen status.

Now nearing his military retirement, Gaius has one goal: to set the XIVth Legion up for success in conquering Eorzea.
